The Sunday Times 2012 - The Very Best
Day 1 |
Depart London Heathrow on overnight British Airways flight to Johannesburg. |
Day 2 - 3 |
On arrival in Johannesburg, connect with your onward flight to Hoedspruit. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to the magnificent Royal Malewane Game Lodge in the Thornybush Game Reserve. You spend the next two nights here on a full board basis to include game viewing activities. Exquisite, elegant and super luxurious is this eight suite jewel on the western edge of the Kruger National Park. Each suite is spacious and gracious with a living and sleeping area as well as a large wooden deck, complete with its own plunge pool. The suites are furnished with antique furniture and rugs as well as satellite TV and every comfort a traveller should require. Completely separate from each other they are linked to the main lodge by wooden walkways as well as to the state-of-the-art Waters of Royal Malewane Bush Spa and gymnasium. Food is one of the highlights of a stay with gourmet dinners held under the stars in the boma, in the elegance of the main dining room or in the extravagance of a Bedouin tent in the bush. |
Day 4 - 6 |
Today you return to Hoedspruit for your flight to Cape Town. Upon arrival in Cape Town pick up your hire car and make the short drive to the beautiful Cape Grace hotel for your three night stay on a bed and breakfast basis. Situated in the heart of Cape Town's waterfront overlooking the international yacht marina on its own private quay at the Victoria and Alfred waterfront, this five-star property offers quiet elegance and an award-winning restaurant. Each of its 121 rooms are spacious and superbly comfortable while all have French doors which open onto the city’s great vistas – the mountain, the bay and the waterfront. The hotel also sports a renowned restaurant, cocktail bar, whisky bar, wine cellar and a top floor spa offering African-inspired treatments. |
Day 7 - 8 |
Drive to La Residence in the Franschhoek in the magnificent winelands for your two night stay on a bed and breakfast basis. La Residence is quite simply in a class of its own. Located in the beautiful Franschhoek valley, where vineyards and mountains create an idyllic backdrop, La Residence is a feast for the senses. It’s a boutique hotel with just 11 rooms, but what rooms! Decorated with French antiques, sumptuous Persian rugs and chandeliers, each room is unique, boasting a terrace with glorious views. There are also six individually-designed villas set in the vineyards - perfect for families or those searching for solitude. This is also a gourmet destination that celebrates regional produce and fresh ingredients, so be prepared for temptation. As for activities, take off on helicopter trips and hot-air balloon excursions, saddle up for private wine tastings on horseback, book a massage or simply let your worries drift away in the infinity pool. |
Day 9 -10 |
Upon check out make the scenic from Franschhoek to Hermanus for your two night stay at Birkenhead House and Villa. Along the coast from Cape Town is the super-luxurious Birkenhead House & Villa, a stunning retreat surrounded by unspoilt coastline. Choose from 11 beautifully styled rooms. Explore the town of Hermanus with its chic shops and cafés just a clifftop walk away. Gaze out from the terrace towards two of Hermanus’s best beaches – fantastic for bathing as well as whale watching (July to December) - or ask the hotel to pack you a picnic basket to eat on the beach. When it comes to dining, the emphasis is on modern African cuisine with Asian and Italian influences and fresh ingredients, so gourmets will be in seventh heaven. The spa offers massage, aromatherapy and reflexology treatments that are pure pampering, just like the hotel. |
Day 11 |
Make the drive back to Cape Town airport today and drop off your hire car before in time for your flight back to the UK. |
